About Me

Hello! I'm Annabelle Hermey, a Computer Science and Engineering student-athlete at Dartmouth College. My primary programming languages are VHDL, Java, MATLAB, and Python. Currently, I am working on my machine learning and full-stack web-development skills. I’m also proficient in SolidWorks and working with FPGA and VGA interfaces. Whether it's hardware, software, or a mix of both, I'm always excited to build and learn.

Outside of work, I serve as a mentor for the Women in Science program and compete on Dartmouth's Women Rowing team. I love to read and do embroidery. Feel free to explore my projects and websites below!

Huffman Coding Details

Using Java, created a set of prefix-free codes based on character frequency to optimize data compression. Designed an algorithm to analyze file character frequencies, construct a priority queue for tree generation, and build a code map through a single traversal of the Huffman tree; potential applications include auto-completion for text.

Webcam-based Painting Details

Engineered a program that transforms webcam input into a dynamic painting tool, allowing users to “paint” by moving an object (e.g., a hand or marker tip) in front of the camera. Integrated region detection and key press commands to control various painting functions, including brush selection, canvas clearing, and background changes.

Landing Page Details

Developed a fully responsive, mobile-friendly landing page using semantic HTML, replicating the structure and layout of a professional site using only HTML and CSS. Reverse-engineered an existing commercial landing page using Chrome DevTools to understand layout, structure, and responsive design principles. Structured key elements including navigation, call-to-action buttons, feature highlights, image sections, and footer with semantic tags and clean, accessible HTML markup.

Quiz Site Details

Built an interactive, ad-free quiz web application from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to dynamically compute and display quiz results based on user input. Implemented client-side input validation, responsive hover/click animations, and conditional rendering of results with modals or inline output. Practiced Git Feature Flow with branching and pull requests to manage distinct JavaScript and styling improvements.

Mini Photoshop Details

Implemented Poisson image blending to seamlessly composite regions from a source image into a target using gradient-domain techniques. Solved a sparse linear system to preserve source gradients while ensuring smooth transitions at boundaries, avoiding visible seams.

License Plate Transformation Details

Applied affine and perspective transformations to estimate and reverse geometric distortions in images using Python and NumPy. Computed a homography matrix from point correspondences to undistort angled license plate images, simulating real-world forensic enhancement. Developed custom routines to construct and solve linear systems for both affine and perspective warping corrections.

Rinse & Ready Details

Co-invented an eco-friendly, quick, and efficient dishwashing solution for dorms and campus buildings, tailored for washing food containers. Led the design process from initial sketches to 3D modeling in SolidWorks, incorporating features like strainers, water jets, and an in-line soap dispenser. Achieved 57% faster washing time compared to handwashing with 63% less water usage and 146% less bacteria colonies and earned high praises for innovation and functionality.

Inverted Pendulum Details

Designed and implemented a proportional-integral-derivative integral (PID) controller to stabilize an inverted pendulum mounted on a moving car, ensuring the pendulum recovered from disturbances and maintained balance by controlling the motor to drive and reverse the car. Modeled the system dynamics by deriving equations for the physical and motor systems, analyzing control loops using MATLAB, and designing a compensator circuit with root locus to achieve stability and robustness. Conducted rigorous testing, addressing challenges like jitter, drift, and hardware limitations to achieve a functional and responsive stabilization system.

Wordle (FPGA) Details

Collaborated on a Wordle game variant using an FPGA, allowing users to input five-letter words for comparison against a target word with feedback on correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters. Developed VHDL code to establish an SCI interface between PuTTY and the FPGA. Implemented code for character input through letter matching in VHDL.

Morse Code Converter Details

Developed a user interface that converts typed input into Morse code audio, complete with correct syntax. Using VHDL, implemented a system to translate ASCII characters from SCI into Morse code signals, output through a speaker connected to an FPGA; potential applications include embedded hardware and cybersecurity.

Black Box Lab Details

DAnalyzed and identified the components of a parallel RL circuit using waveform data and Bode plots from two unknown circuits, one LTI and one non-LTI. Employed MATLAB to model and verify predictions, and presented results to lab instructors.

NaviGlasses Details

Designed and prototyped a wearable/environment-based navigation aid for new college students, using non-visual cues (vibrations, audio, light) to guide users around campus. Conducted user research and usability testing to understand how students interpret subtle directional feedback and improve trust in navigation systems without relying on GPS. Mapped out end-to-end user flows, identified key pain points in current campus navigation methods, and integrated features like live social insights, accessibility mapping, and indoor routing.
